GY-FR-OP31 flammability Test Report on PE/EVA foaming
GYC GROUP has been committed to the development and research of flame retardants for many years. Many products require UL94 flame retardant testing, which categorizes their flame retardant capabilities based on the burning behavior of plastic at different thicknesses. This test is conducted for horizontal burning of foam materials. Foam materials can be used in everyday life such as sports equipment, protective gear, medical supplies, clothing, and building materials. They are lightweight and convenient to use. However, in general, the Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) value of foam products is relatively low. Therefore, flame retardants need to be added to improve the LOI value.”
Description
Intro
GYC Group has been committed to the development and research of flame retardants for more than 4 decades. GYC products have been recognized and purchased by listed companies. Many products require UL94 flame retardant certificate, which is announced by Underwriters Laboratories and is currently the most widely used standard for evaluating flame retardant performance in the market. UL94 classifies the flame-retardant ability of plastics based on their burning behavior under different thicknesses.
UL94 mainly evaluates the ability of the flame to extinguish after it has ignited on a material, and the evaluation methods based on different conditions such as whether the dripping is ignited, the anti-dropping ability, burning speed, and burning time can be various.
UL94 has five tests:
- HB (horizontal burning)
- V-0, V-1, V-2 (50 W vertical burning)
- 5VA, 5VB (500 W vertical burning)
- VTM-0 VTM-1, VTM-2 (thin material vertical burning)
- HBF, HF-1, HF-2 (foamed material horizontal burning)
This test is a horizontal burning test for foamed materials.
GY-FR-OP31 is a new type of environmentally friendly halogen-free phosphorus flame retardant, which can be applied to epoxy resins, polyester resins, and polyurethane resins by reaction or addition. It provides excellent stability and exhibits good flame retardant effect. It can be used as a compound or added to other plastics, rubbers, and resins. Due to the rise of environmental awareness, the demand for halogen-free flame retardants is increasing day by day. Therefore, GYC GROUP has specially developed GY-FR-OP31 flame retardant to achieve the purpose of fire prevention in various materials, such as coatings and various resins, TPE system flame retardant applications, rubber industry, various foams and PE foaming, aerospace industry, and composite materials while meeting environmental requirements.
Test:
Model: GY-FR-OP31 New environmentally friendly halogen-free flame retardant
Test conditions: PE/EVA foam materials with GY-FR-OP31 added
Test purpose: Confirm the fire resistance of GY-FR- OP31 to PE/EVA materials in accordance with the UL94 standard.
Test results:
Number | Flame combustion time (sec.) | Flame spark combustion time
(sec.) |
Burn length

#1 | 0 | 0 | 24.0 | No |
#2 | 0 | 0 | 29.2 | No |
#3 | 0 | 0 | 21.1 | No |
#4 | 0 | 0 | 25.7 | No |

Conclusion:
GYC GROUP is the largest fire retardant producer in Asia. With over 40 years of technical experience in the chemical industry, we provide customers with a complete range of solutions.
Foam products have many air holes distributed internally, making them more flammable and prone to public safety issues. Due to their inherent flammability, when adding fire retardants, halogenated fire retardants are usually added to achieve the expected fire resistance.
However, with the rise of environmental awareness, the demand for halogen-free fire retardants continues to increase. Therefore, GYC GROUP has specially developed a new environmentally friendly halogen-free flame retardant, GY-FR-OP31, which can be effectively used in PE foam materials to achieve the purpose of fire resistance while also fulfilling a company’s social responsibility. In this experiment, GY-FR-OP31 was added to PE/EVA foam materials, and the results showed that the fire resistance of the samples with GY-FR-OP31 added was improved, and all achieved the HF-1 standard in the UL-94 test results, this demonstrates its excellent fire resistance.
